Al-Sadd extended their run of victories in the QNB Stars League, after defeating Al-Markhiya 1-0 in the Round 12 game played on Sunday at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.
With this victory, Al-Sadd increased their tally to 16 points from ten games, with two postponed matches remaining to be played, against Qatar and Al-Duhail.
The only goal of the game was scored by Baghdad Bounedjah in the 12th minute. The Algerian striker began the move himself, winning the ball for his team with a block, before moving into the box at the right time to meet a low cross from the right by Musaab Khidir.
Pedro thought he had doubled Al-Sadd’s lead in the 29th minute, but the referee ruled the strike out for offside.
Despite their best efforts, the Wolves were unable to breach Al-Markhiya’s defence thereafter. Akram Afif came close in the 59th minute, but his shot hit the post after a slight touch from keeper Louay Sharif.
Head coach Juanma only made one change in this game, which was to bring in Guilherme in place of Musaab Khidir. That substitution meant that Guilherme added strength in midfield alongside Santi Cazorla, while Hassan Al-Haydos switched to the right side.
The defending champions kept up their attempts to score another goal but the game went on to end in a 1-0 victory, and despite the narrow scoreline, it is an important result for the team.
