Al-Sadd exited the Qatar Cup in the semifinals after losing to Al-Wakrah in a penalty shootout, following a 2-2 draw during regular time. The match was played at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium on Wednesday.
Al-Sadd took the lead early in the game, with Akram Afif finding the back of the net in the 11th minute, courtesy of a well-executed cross from Paulo Otavio. The team continued to dominate the proceedings, and their efforts were rewarded when Gonzalo Plata doubled their lead in the 27th minute with a clinical finish inside the box.
However, Al-Wakrah refused to back down and launched a comeback in the second half. Ayoub Assal pulled one back for his side in the 73rd minute, and the momentum shifted in Al-Wakrah’s favor. They then managed to equalise in the dying moments of the game through Gelson Dala’s goal in the 90th minute.
With the score level at 2-2 after regular time, the match headed into a tense penalty shootout to determine the winner. Eventually, it was Al-Wakrah who held their nerve, edging past Al-Sadd with a 5-4 victory in the shootout.
