QNB Stars League: Al-Sadd lose 2-1 to Al-Wakrah

Al-Sadd lost 2-1 to Al-Wakrah in the QNB Stars League Round 7 game which was played on Wednesday at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium.

The result means that Al-Sadd go into the league break, with a tally of 7 points from 7 games, after two victories, four defeats and a draw.

Gelson Dala netted twice for Al-Wakrah (73′, 88′), either side of Al-Sadd’s lone goal, which came from a penalty scored by Santi Cazorla in the 86th minute.

Andre Ayew had a chance to open the scoring in the 12th minute, but his shot was kept out by Saoud Al-Khater before hitting the crossbar.

After a first half that ended goalless and without many concrete chances, Al-Sadd had a strong penalty claim denied by referee Abdulrahman Al-Jassim in the 58th minute. Baghdad Bounedjah then had the ball in the net in the 63rd minute, but the goal was not given, following a lengthy VAR review that ended with an offside call on the Algerian striker.

Al-Wakrah took the lead in the 73rd minute after a ball in from the right by Omar Ali. Al-Sadd goalkeeper Ivanildo kept out the cross and then the first attempt from Dala on the rebound, but the latter managed to score on the second occasion.

The goal raised the urgency of Al-Sadd’s attempts, and following a period of increased pressure, they won a penalty which was dispatched by Santi Cazorla to level the score in the 86th minute.

Just two minutes later, Dala scored again, this time from a volley after a loose ball fell in front of him at the edge of the box.

Al-Sadd went all out for another equaliser, but despite their best attempts in 13 minutes of stoppage time, the goal did not come and Al-Wakrah managed to secure the 2-1 victory.
